About Britebound

Beem Credit Union is one of British Columbia's largest provincially regulated credit unions. It was formed in 2024 when several long-standing BC credit unions united under one brand, including Interior Savings and G&F Financial, BlueShore Financial and others. Serving nearly 200,000 members across 66 branches province-wide, Beem pairs more than 80 years of credit union history with a mandate to reinvent what modern, member-first banking looks like.

The Challenge

Beem's Innovation team works ahead of the product roadmap. While product managers focus on what’s shipping in the next year, the Innovation team explores concepts for initiatives 2-3+ years on the horizon, helping identify which opportunities may be worth deeper exploration or future investment.

Beem had been using traditional UX testing for product feedback but wanted something more conversational and human; plus, they needed an approach to research that could keep pace with innovation work.

“If we think about an innovation team, our role is to help the organization make better decisions by bringing meaningful customer insights forward faster,” says Gina Iuliano, Innovation Leader at Beem. “It’s about aligning to strategy, testing quickly, learning quickly, and using what we learn to refine the solution, reduce risk, and move forward with confidence.”

The Solution

Beem opted for Rival’s Voice of Market solution to support faster, more flexible concept testing with BC-based consumers sourced from the Angus Reid Canadian panel. The solution allows the team to design its own surveys, test ideas in a more interactive way, and receive feedback quickly, while still having expert support from the team at Rival.

At Beem, the Innovation team’s approach works like a funnel. For each strategic priority, the team tests multiple concepts with real consumers — five different approaches to growing deposits, for example — narrows it down to the strongest one or two, then iterates on the winners. From there, testing can go as granular as individual features and user experiences.

The flexibility of Rival’s platform has enabled research across other Beem business units to do research too. It’s supported testing on digital banking features, small business, and retail banking solutions. And when BlueShore Financial joined the Beem family in 2025, the team tested onboarding flows to support a smooth member transition.

With Rival sourcing and vetting real, local consumers for every study, the team gets fresh perspectives without ever managing recruitment themselves. The team at Rival also supports studies from end to end, in a partnership that extends well beyond onboarding. "I consume research, and I love research, but I'm not a research analyst," she says, “Rival's hands-on support is what makes running studies workable me and my team.”

Next up: Beem is building an Insight Community made up entirely of its own members, with a privacy-first design that meets the credit union's strict compliance needs. The insight community gives product, marketing, and communications teams a direct line to current members, while innovation continues to reach non-members for exploratory concept work. Longer term, Beem sees the potential to connect what members say with behavioural data it already holds — turning the community into a true member intelligence engine.

Why Beem chose Rival

For Beem, the clearest return has been speed to insight. “The number of tests we can complete in a period of time is much more than if we went through a more traditional research process” says Iuliano. And the speed has not come at the expense of quality. The responses from participants have helped the team understand what resonates, what creates confusion, and where concepts need to be refined before moving further into development.

Cost is another side of the equation. As a member-owned organization, Beem considers every dollar it spends carefully, and research must earn its place in the budget. Studies through Rival cost less than engaging a traditional research firm for each study, so the same budget covers far more research.

Perhaps the biggest impact is that none of the innovation work has required the support of a dedicated research team. An innovation leader, not an analyst, runs the program end to end, with Rival handling recruitment and providing expert guidance along the way.
